i had been taking some photographs recently and i noticed that the flash was washing out the images in the foreground of my shot. is there any way to correct this without affecting the background of the shot?

Try slow sync flash mode if you have it available...

_Sometimes_ an overactive flash can be toned down a little bit without radically affecting the background lighting by covering it with a piece of paper (tissue paper, toilet paper, even writing paper).

Yah, tissue paper works well.

You can even make a set of colored tissue paper covers(flares is what I call em) and they can give you all kinds of cool light affects

If you can attach a remote flash to your camera, try that. Move the flash off-axis to your camera, or move it back. Another old trick, is to bounce the flash off the ceiling or wall toward your subject at an angle. This way, the light appears to come from up higher, and looks a bit more natural.

If you can move the flash 45 degrees from the subject, you can also try using a polarizing filter to help minimize effects of glare as well.

Check your flash settings. On my Mavica 73 I have a "High", "Normal" and "Low" flash level. I have mine set on Low as the other two were way too strong.

Also wax paper works really good to cover the flash to tone it down some.
