If you can attach a remote flash to your camera, try that. Move the flash off-axis to your camera, or move it back. Another old trick, is to bounce the flash off the ceiling or wall toward your subject at an angle. This way, the light appears to come from up higher, and looks a bit more natural.
If you can move the flash 45 degrees from the subject, you can also try using a polarizing filter to help minimize effects of glare as well.
