I hope this doesn’t come off as being very rude (via lazy), but I have never submitted anything to a stock company, and was wondering if any of you have written something along the lines of “The top 50 things you should know about stock photography.”

I honestly don’t mind researching… but the personal experiences of people who do it regularly are often a far better and valid source of information than random web sites.

I am going through the threads, but am getting little snap shots, when what I need is a reliable primer.

I throw good karma on anyone willing to lend a hand

This is an interesting article about where to put your photos. One thing I like about it is the breakdown of how much he makes on each site. He even updated it last month.

Istock shows each photos sales and has a Most Popular Page, so yoou can get a good idea of what designer's want.

A couple big caveats:

1. Be super picky about your own images and post-processing. They're going to be when they consider your photos for acceptance. I'm amazed that my photos were ever accepted in the beginning!

2. It's going to take a LOT of photoe before you see much return on your portfolio. I'm at 105 pics on Istock and my downloads are steady, but it's going to YEARS to pay off any of my equipment purchases :)

3. When you're looking at the best-seller's, realize that the "easy" ones have been duplciated ad nauseam. For instance, most of this summer on Istock the best seller was a "lonely tree" shot. So, ten thousand photograpers went out and took pictures of a single tree in a field. The other 29,999 lonely tree shots on Istock don't sell that much.

Better to look for holes in coverage than to try to ride on someone else's success. More profitable anyway.

Thank you for the information. I have actually decided that it wouldn't be worth my time and effort. And I don't want photography to become a chore.
