How are you doing those photos that are mainly black & white but has one part of it in colour?Is it allowed in dpchallange to send those kinds of photos?
Here is the example I usualy use Photoshop 7 and Paint Shop Pro 8.

I use PhotoShop 7 also...
All i do is use the Hue/Saturation tool under the Image/Adjustment tool bar
All I do is pick the colors I don't want in the Photo and put -100 as the Saturation value.
I am sure there are many ways to do this but that is what I do!
open a picture in photoshop. click on layer and select new adjustment layer. then click on hue/saturation. check the box to group with previous layer and ok. you should see the hue/saturation adjustment box. at the top it should say master. click on the drop down arrow and select a color. move the saturation slider all the way to the left and look at the results. when you are finished, click on layers again and flatten image. then save as or save for web. I hope this helps
the NECR one actually wasnt done with hue/saturation
and wouldn't be enterable in a contest here but,
i cut out the windows - pasted them into a new image
desaturated the original and pasted the color
windows back into the original - that way i was able to keep the colors
in the windows true...
In my opinion, this should be seen as spot editing and be illegal, as it strictly speaking isn't a "colour adjustment" done on the whole of an image: It only adjusts the selective colours in an image.
When that has been said, I did write an article on c -> b&w, which you might be interested in. Not the same thing, obviously, but... eh.. yeh.
Whoh - hold your horses, I didn't mean to insult you - just expressing my opinion on site policy. If anyone should be offended, it should be the site council (and I know them as some hard-nosed people, so I'm sure they can handle the criticism.)

SharQ, thanx for the tutorial. I do use the channel mixer but I usually just slide around till I see something I like. But the way you have explained it will help me not to "just slide" in future. Cheers!

We can assume the 'it' from "it is rubbish" and "it is legal" is in fact the same pronoun. Hence, 'it' would be referring to B&W+colouring, rather than soup's shot.
anyhow i made it clear in my post that it wasn't an enterable photo.
i didnt take any offense - to sharQ's comment - but didnt understand what was meant by it...
it would have been hard to keep the array of colors in that particular image - using the channels and saturation tools
i took it before i joined here.
between the conflicting lines, and the color on the windows - i found it
intriguing. looked better B&W
What a difference of mood that the color one is compared to the colored one. The colored one looks too busy, especially with the peoples' clothes being very similar to the color of the transporter. Great shots.
so should images done in other ways not be posted here?
I'm not sure what you mean, but I think anything should be posted here if it helps people learn about colour adjustment like this - DPC legal or otherwise. ;)

For a journalist, I seem to be shockingly uneloquent. I thought it'd be obvious fromt he context, but both the "it's legal" and the "it's rubbish" was referring to the site rules, and both sentences could be written together as "my personal opinion is that the fact that this would be a legal image to submit is rubbish. However, it is legal, so go for it, if you want".

As for your picture: It certainly isn't rubbish, but it leaves a lot of things to be desired. For one thing, the barrel distortion really gets on my tits. The building looks rounded. If you had walked 15 meters further back and zoomed in a little, you'd probably have gotten rid of it. Furthermore, while a nice touch, I don't think the addition of the blue squares in form of the windows adds anything to the image overall.
The symmetry of the whole thing is pretty cool, but the picture appears slightly unsharp, the picture seems to lack a focal point, and nothing is happening in the picture. If you had shoved your camera on a tripod, used a reasonably long shutter time (1/15 should have done it) and had someone dressed in an old-fashioned costume walk across, preferably towards one of the sides, either walking into or out of the picture (I'd probably place them on the left of the pic, walking out, but that is just my sense of dynamic), at least you'd have something happening.
but 10' behind me is a huge 15' deep hole
and i have none of those options with the camera i currently own. ( besides the tripod )
no zoom- no control on shutter or aperture - no control over focus
the windows are true color as seen the day of the photo
the dynamic aspect in my mind - was the sole white window on each pane.
