Im interested in what kind of techniques everybody uses for lighting... Better yet, inexpensive alternatives. Wax paper over a lamp or bright flashlight has worked well for me, but I am wondering what kinds of other fun things people have invented to reduce lighting costs, and how they apply them. Any advice would be appreciated!

Here is a simplistic, inexpensive idea...

Most of the time people put things over light sources as a diffuser... the cheapest diffuser you have is placing your subject far enough away from their background that they do not cast a sharp shadow. It is amazing how often we forget that simple idea.

This probably wont be much help but alot of the setup shots that my wife and I do use the sun either when covered by clouds or off in the shadow of our back porch. We have a homemade light tent and a bunch of little lamps and stuff but outdoors really works well for us - and man is it cheap!

I have used this successfully for many years. Cheap and effective.
