It depends on where you have your prints done, but generally 2 options are used: Either crop the photo evenly to fill the size of the target photo or have white space on top and bottom or both sides to make the whole photo show, regardless of print size. Sometimes you have control over this, sometimes you don't. I have never heard of anyplace stretching a photo to print, which would ruin most photos -- which is probably why no one uses this approach.
Your approach of cropping the images to the exact ratio for the target print is probably your best bet for getting exactly what you want, and yes, your numbers look correct.
