I was checking dictionary.com what the word urban means
1. Of, relating to, or located in a city.
2. Characteristic of the city or city life.
Ok it means city something
And in the challenge description it says
Shoot anything with buildings - from cities to villages.
So urban is buildings or ?
I agree, there seems to be a conflict of description here. I wouldn't expect anything in a village to look urban. My guess is that allowing village buildings is to enable people who don't live in a city to compete. To me, urban is a mood. Film noir gets close to this mood, as do these cliches:
Gritty, grey, neon, wet, skyscrapers, desolation, alone, homeless, graffiti, trains/ tubes/ underground/ metro, hip, cool, commuters, etc. I'm sure that many of these qualities can be created in a village.
The challenge description states anything with buildings in a city or village...now it seems that the popular concensus is that it needs to be in a city, my questions is that even though it states village in the challenge description, will people who submit photos of such automatically receive lower votes because it does not mean "urban" to some people.

yeh Reykjavík is a big city to me But to most of you I guess it is village. We dont have any undergrounds or skyscrabers so I guess if I take a picture for this challenge it will be village looking to some of you ;)
I think including villages is fair. Villages don't have to mean mud huts (we're all owners of digital cameras / computers around here). "Villages" often mean, they only have a general store & a gas station. That's urban =)

The challenge says "villages to cities" because "urban" means something different to everyone... To an eskimo the word "urban" probably means the local hardware store and gas station, so there's nothing wrong with that...
But: I think pics that are more urban then others will do better. It's just a fact of life that not everyone lives in the exact same environment and will be able to meet the challenge as "well" as others. If we go back to our Eskimo example, I'm sure they would be at an advantage if we ever have a "Artic Tundra" challenge. :)
