Is anyone at DPC in St. Petersburg (Russia) on Oct 6, 7, 8, or 9 2006?
On some of the evenings I might be able to meet someone who's also in town. I'll pay for the Vodka. :)
Returning on the 10th, the only moment I could meet up with someone on this day is during a short stop at Arlanda airport in Stockholm and on the 6th in the morning at Kopenhagen airport.

I wish I could join you Sander... St. Petersburg (I am more used to its previous name Leningrad) is one of my favorite cities. Have fun there and be careful with Vodka :). In addition to all in-town attractions I highly recommend to visit at least one of the beautiful suburbian palaces and parks (Petrodvorets/Peterhof, Pushkin, the latter is my favorite). I hope the weather cooperates...

O yeah, you joining would have been very cool. I've been there before and since I am returning you can guess: It is one of my fav world cities too. :)
Pushkin is part of the plan, altough I prefer Pavlovsk. The Catherine palace is so over the top in luxury that it makes me feel uncomfortable, altough the garden and archicture is very nice. Pavlovsk feels simpler, is a lot smaller and feels more like something I could live in. :)

I agree with you, the luxury of some of the old palaces is quite a bit excessive, but it is offset by some visible decay of thge recent history. I love the park of the Catherine palace, too. My last trip to Russia which included St. Petersburg was in 2003, I found a few shots from it (some of them have purely nostaligic value and a few require basic knowledge of Russian language to appreciate the humor), but FWIW

Yes, Petrodvorets is great. I went there in 1984, in April. The fountains weren't on, though. I met someone later who went there in June or July - huge difference in the size of the crowds.
In those days (I don't know about now), you were allowed to photograph inside - well, the Hermitage, at any rate.

What I also hope to explore is some of the ruins at Tsarkoe Selo, like the Yusupov palace. Always good settings for cool pics.

The fountains are off as soon as or as long as there is a chance that it will freeze. Last time I was there late october and it was the first week of nightly subzero temperatures so the fountains were off and they were busy encasing all the statues. So I didn't go there. :)
You are still allowed to photograph inside, it costs you 100 roebel extra. But that is peanuts for the stuff you can photograph.
I'm still thinking about what lenses I shall bring with me. It's mainly the 70-200 that I have doubts about. The 30 and 50 f/1.4's are no brainers for the inside shoots. Lev's 18-200 would be the ideal companion to those. :)
I will not be able to attend but being that I was born and grew up in St. Petersburg I would like to see the photos very much. Don't forget to upload them.
