The purpose in Basic is to edit non-destructively -- you can go back and change the adjustment later. For example, I often use an Adjustment Layer with Curves, on RGB. I'll then make a second AL for a Curve restricted to the Blue/Yellow Channel. After doing that, I might want to go back and tweak the RGB Curve.
Also, with an AL, you can change the opacity of the effect, which is similar to applying the "Fade" effect, but again is non-destructive, and can be changed/undone up until the time you save a flattened image in TIFF or JPEG format ...
