If a member enters a free study (where you get 600+ entries) I think they should be required to vote on a higher percentage of photos. I don't like the fact that there are 600 entries and 200 votes each. Seems like that number should be closer to 300. I would think it would probably cause fewer to enter, and also would make for a very acurate vote.
I have an informal policy not to vote on challenges I enter. It may sound strange but I sometimes find myself comparing entries to mine and influencing my vote a little bit (eg: "that's not as good as mine and I'm scoring 5.3 so this is only a 5"). I don't think that's a good mindset so I don't vote when I think I'm feeling that way.
When there are that many entries obviously there are people who follow the site but do not regularly enter challenges or vote. The Free Study gets them to enter the challenge, but they feel no obligation to vote. The votes received are usually higher by the end of the week. Also, with this many entries many people vote on the 20% to get their votes counted and then if they have time they will vote on more.
as a person who commented and voted on every one of the the free study photos I can see how its just not doable for a more busy person. as a stay at home mom all i had to do was ingnore my kids to do it(95% joking). lots of people just cant and some arent able to seperate themselves from the competition aspect and fear they will vote down others unfailrly so they avoid it all together and im happier that they know they should avoid voting and stay away from it rather than having people voting me down all the time. lol.
They are already required to vote 20% I am just saying up that a bit.
I was (and maybe still am) a little confused if you mean require all entrants to vote (over 20%) or have voting still be optional but increase the percentage in order for the votes to count.
Not to start an argument, but what's with all this "requiring" people to do things threads lately?
I, personally, think "requiring" voting or commenting is a BAD idea.

That's to make the votes count. From what I read from your original post is that requiring a certain amount of votes was a requirement for entering. I may have read it incorrectly.
From about 100 votes onward, the score doesn't change a great deal anymore.
By 150 votes we're down to only minute fluctuations.
If you get 200 votes, it is nearly set in concrete.
There is no need for THAT many votes.
I vote on every image in every challenge, but that's because that's how I learn from this site. Everyone has their reasons for being at DPC, and people learn from the site in different ways. If submitting shots and reading the comments is how you learn, so be it... if voting helps you learn, so be it. If you never submit or vote but learn from the forums, so be it.
I see no reason to impose requirements on people who may benefit from the site in ways other than what those requirements would impose.
I guess my take on it is if we all entered all the available challenges, and didn't vote on those we entered, who would vote?
It just seems that there are not many voters out there. It would be cool to see 1000 votes on a challenge. I know that won't happen, but it would be cool.
I used to try to vote on every image by using multiple windows. Then dpc made that impossible (due to technical problems which seemed to mess up the votes). Now I'm lucky if I get through half the voting in a normal week in which there is no Free Study to vote on. Make voting compulsory and I won't be able to enter Free Study challenges again. Not as long as I remain on dial-up anyway.
