Thanks, diametunim. My intent/focus was on the detail of the pin, but I still wanted to have the gem sparkle and couldn't seem to achieve it without getting shadows or hot spots.

i think this photo could be better with a totally blown out background

Even though it'd be the obvious way to photograph this, I would have liked to have seen the focus on the stone rather than the metal. I like it, though.

Thanks for the comments and tips, all.
The stone is not in very good shape. (It's been in my family a very long time.) A corner is slightly chipped and when I focused on the stone all the imperfections seemed to be exaggerated. I really like the detail of the metal and thought that would be more interesting. Just couldn't pull off the shot I envisioned with crisp detail and sparkle. I tried white paper and a maglight...didn't try foil, yet. I need a couple more hands to hold everything!
