I just think that maybe the voting has been a bit strange. This is not a dig on the photos that have won lately, I liked them and scored them all very well. Any thoughts? I have not entered in a couple weeks and was just surprised by the final tally.
I repeat! I am not bashing any of the winners at all!
i think i know what you mean. while i love the current winners, i think the "style" of the winners has changed, perhaps from "pretty picture" to something else
Maybe that is it. I can't put my finger on how I feel exactly about them. I know that on the home page there is only 1 image I would ever think about hanging on my wall. I wonder if others have that same feeling.
for example, look at this challenge compared to one on the homepage now. There is definetly a different feel. I really can't say which i like better, though.
I do understand what you mean. Nothing against the winners, but there are only 3 on the home page I would have given a 9 or 10. They still are possibly the best in each challenge, but if were put up in a Free Study, they might not do as well, KWIM?
What I think it is, is the challenges have been difficult to shoot with creativity.
Fire, Peas, and Camera Self Portrait all lend itself to many unoriginal entries. 'Stupid' is just a hard subject because you really have to tell a story with the picture.
My thinking exactly! You need to look at the challenge subject(s) and given the links posted above you are comparing two challenges that have a completely different set of parameters not to mention limitations set by the challenge description. The 'style' of you will can/will be/influenced by what the challenge subject is. With the example posted I really think it is comparing apples to oranges.
Are you saying we should take some votes away from someone? Who determines which votes they didn't deserve? Certainly we'd have to all take a vote on that....
nope, not saying that at all. I gave decent marks to each of these. Just not 10's. Nothing can be done about it, and I am not calling it foul play, it just seems strange.
Don't mistake winning photos at DP Challenge as anything other than "Winning Photos at DP Challenge".
That is what they are, that is what they should be.
It might mean they are pretty, it might mean they are not. It might mean they are weird, it might mean they are boring. It might mean they are a little of all of the above.
The photos represent the voters and how THEY perceive the challenge more than how individual phtographers visualized the challenge.
Isn't it ironic in an interesting way? The challenge is given to us as photographers but it's really the voters that take the challenge and tell us (the photographer) what the vision is.
It's weird because if you go to photo exhibitions the work you see there is representative of the artist or the gallery and the public has to just take it in. Here, the final gallery (front page) is what the public is asying to the photographers and the photographer has to just take it in! :-)

I know what you're saying. When viewing as thumbnails especially, the front page actually has a lot less "pop" than it usually does. I wouldn't have expected a lot of dazzle from "camera self portrait" and "stupid", so that's no surprise; but I'd have though "magic & mystery" was ripe for spectacle and we don't see that on the front page...
I definately have noticed that the winners are of a different style at least then the winners i saw a few months ago. i noticed it first around the time i ribboned. I cant believe I did. My photos was much different than the photos that had been ribboning before that. It does seem to me to be a slight trend away from serene photos which is good for me as mine are rarely all that serene. but I do see how it could be realted to the challenge topics as well.

How are the two venues described comparible? One is a showing and the other is a contest.
If you took the winning images on the front page and displayed them in a gallery, then you would be displaying something representative of the artist at that point.
Hmmm...I guess you have all the visitors to the gallery cast votes (score) on the images presented and display the top 3 at the end of the week as the gallery ribbon winners.
Perhaps you weren't making a comparison - just an observation. If so, please excuse my ramblings...it was fun to think about. ;^)

Lately, when I see that "hanging on my wall" phrase, I'm bothered by it.
Where is it written that it has to be something you'd hang on your wall?
Why can't it be the winner best represented the challenge description and displayed excellent photography skill....and pp skill...if we must...lol. I certainly hope that dpc is evolving again. poo poo on eye candy. ;)
