I was up to the camera store (haven't been there for 4 months out of self-preservation) to get a new CF Card for the Oregon journey. Got one, 2Gb 110x, no problem. They've expanded the store, now they have a gallery. Signed me up for a month-long show next June, that's nice.
But....
I dropped my guard and walked out of there with a Canon 1.4x extender to use on my 70-200mm f/4L... Can't really afford it, but I did it, sheesh. The devil made me do it. His name is Joe...
My 320mm equivalent is now 448mm :-) I got REACH at last!
I got it all warmed up and ready to go when I hit the beach at Oregon :-)
Oh, I forgot to mention; they showed me the 400mm f/4L DO... Gawd, what a lens. But that one lens is worth as much as every other piece of gear I own combined :-(
I got tricked into buying an extender once, Robert. But I got home and thought - now I don't really need that and can't really afford it.. I'm taking it back! And I meant it! And so with full conviction I went back to the devil's den and I handed them the glass and said I would like a ref...uunnn...d...pp....lll..eeeeeeaaaaass...oh and that fisheye right there! Ended up spending another $200 bucks on top of the extender's price!
Have fun with your toy Robert...when are you hitting the beaches in Oregon? Gonna do Canon Beach? Sand dunes? Wonderful area...

jejeje™... I've wanted this for a while. I have a lot of opportunities to shoot birds in the marshes but I can't *quite* get close enough with the 70-200... I don't really want another big lens, and anyway good ones cost too much for me right now. This extender is nice and compact, really well made, and extends my range just the right amount to make it useful, at a LOT less than the cost of a new L lens.

Yah! I been there several times, but not in the last 10 years. My nephew is getting married in Eugene September 10th. I'm going out a few days early, and have a place to stay at Cannon Beach and a rental car :-) Looking forward to it.
Very nice. Hopefully the weather will be favorable for you when you get here...Cheers

i've been fighting the urge to walk into a camera store and buy myself an SLR outfit with a couple of lenses, the whole deal. but i'm appeasing the credit card gods by abstaining... for now.
my little G2 is great but it's so slow and limited... and I can't help but think I could be taking much nicer shots with an SLR with a good zoom.
I'm thinking about setting up direct deposit to B&H so I can get the 600mm f/4 I've been wanting. Some things are just more important than food I suppose. :D
Congratulations on the upcoming show! Nice.
Eugene is a pretty city, and that Oregon coast ... wow.
Just gorgeous.
Wouldn't it be grand if your vacation exploring could stretch as far as San Francisco.

Welcome to LBA (Lens Buyers Anonymous) Robert ;-)
Repeat after me
I do not need the 400mm f/4L DO
I do not need the 400mm f/4L DO
I don't need the 400mm f/4L DO
I don't need the 400mm f/4L DO
I do need the 400mm f/4L DO
I do need the 400mm f/4L DO
I so need the 400mm f/4L DO
I so need the 400mm f/4L DO
I love my 400mm f/4L DO
I love my 400mm f/4L DO
Best of luck and enjoy your new lens
I always have this trouble with my wife - she can see that the new lens cost as much as the rest of my gear, but explaining that it is worth as much as the rest of my gear is another matter ;-)
Congrats Robt :) I've been good and not spent a penny on cam gear for more than 4 weeks now - its a record (am thinking the new rechargable batteries for flash and 100 earth pounds on props don't count?).
Loves mine own 1.4x, very handy for those horses-in-huge-pastures shots. Congrats on the show! Guess you'll be exploring the upper reaches of ISO for those OR beach sunset shots?
I'm going out a few days early, and have a place to stay at Cannon Beach and a rental car :-) Looking forward to it.

Just make sure you leave your itinerary somewhere before you head out shooting all by yourself... I think we all learned our lesson thanks to Steve! Besides, I couldn't handle voting on 200 pictures of musical bears after you came back safe and sound! :P
I love and often use my 1.4 (not canon brand) but the other one, that way I can use it on my 100 macro etc... really useful for the times I just can't carry my 70-200 because of weight.

Enjoy the trip.. and the new equipment! :)
I'll be with charliebaker on this trip, or he'll know where I am anyway. No worries.
