When I try to insert a photo into a Pagemaker document, all I get is a photo icon with the file name of the photo. I can't seem to get the photo. Can anyone advise what I am doing wrong, or is the problem in my Pagemaker settings?

What version of PageMaker? Your best bet is it convert a Photoshop file to TIFF first -- you will have far fewer problems.
You can change the PageMaker preferences to determine at what file size a photo will be automatically embedded into the PageMaker file, rather than linking; you can always force embedding by using the Element Info dialog -- this is advisable only if you are sending the file to someone else for printing.
Don't be disturbed if the image preview looks like garbage on the PageMaker layout -- if it's properly linked or embedded it will print fine.

Back in the day when we scanned images we would convert to DCS and supply our client with the preview files. Allowing them to do the layout without the hi-res files so the layout went faster.
We would link to the hi-res on output to our image-setter. But since digital cameras and the advent of the medium format sensor even that has changed.
