When I have, for example, a picture of flowers against a backround, and I want to make everything black and white except for a few flowers, I make a layer, convert it to B&W, then erase the parts I want kept color. Is there an easier way to do this? Maybe something that selects all of one color automatically?

A very simple way is to create a hue/sat layer which desats everything. Then click on the hue/sat "mask" icon to activate it, then use the paint brush with black and paint back the color where you want it.

There are about a million different ways to skin this cat. But I've found the above to be the quickest. Plus since you're only modifying the mask, you can edit what is in color or not by painting black or white in the mask. And because it's a layer you can turn it on or off or adjust opacity at any time.

A very quick way, that is basic legal, is to do a hue/sat adj. layer, and desat the individual color channels, leaving the what channel you want. For instance, desat each channel except red. Then everything would be desaturated except for anything red in the image. There is actually a tutorial in the 'Learn' section on the site.

Here is the link to the tutorial mentioned by Gene Selec Desat for Basic editing , the hue/sat layer is very useful.

I used it for this image and I think the result was very good. I have to say my image is now being validated so I hope I didn't misunderstand any part of the tutorial or I will be crying LoL.

Another way is to create a new black and white later, then use the erase tool one the parts you want in colour - they come through from the layer beneath. Its a bit labour intensive, but it looks really cool! (Dont thinks its legal in basic though)
