Can someone place give me some easy instructions for how to fade the edges of an item in Photoshop Elements 2? I have one layer pasted onto another solid type background and would like to fade the edges of the top layer only.

This works in CS2 but not sure about elements:

Ctrl+click on the thumbnail of the top layer to select around it.

Go to Selection>Feather

Feather, say, 50 pixels

Go to Selection>Inverse

Press delete.

(I don't have PS open to try it but from memory that should work...)

I believe what your referring to is 'vignetting' -- the term may help turn up more search results.

I don't know if elements can do it, but set a circular gradient layer and darken or lighten as needed to make the edges fade to black or white.

Instead of pressing delete, you could press the little layer mask icon under the layers (if elements has it) and that way you can fine-tune the fading later on since no data is lost, just masked :)
