Just scanning through the winners of "From the Ground Up" and found some pretty scathing comments to a new DPCer who won a ribbon. I didn't vote the image as high as a ribbon winner, but, I do think that sour grapes comments AFTER the challenge is pretty shitty. Let SC figure out if the image is basic editing and be happy for somebody. If you don't like it, then keep your mouth shut and make the comments DURING voting, or make constructive ones after the fact but DON'T rain on somebody's parade. What wins around here is pretty much stock photos anyway. Babies, butterflies and the like. I get frustrated, but I'm certainly not going to tell somebody how lucky they are to have won.
What bother me the most is that those comments were made AFTER the challenge. It seems as though, the commenters felt the need to go in and "bring it down a peg" out of spite more so than anything else. Had they really been wanting to give constructive criticism, they would have done so during the voting itself.
You tell'm Judy! I agree with you. I think there are a lot of people here that know a lot and are very good photographers, but that doesn't mean they have the right to go around being "sour grapes" or think they know better than everybody else. I really don't like that sort of attitude. It's just plain mean.
a) I'm always happy with new blue ribbon winners.
b) I actually like this type of editing, popular or not.
c) I will be impressed even more when it is validated under basic editing.

With all those clouds I can definitely see the potiental for some unusual lighting in that scene. That coupled with tools like Shadow/Highlights, USM and Curves you could alter the lighting dramatically from what it actually was. Basically those three things are the dodge and burn of basic editing.
How many stunning black & whites on the front page ever get crapped on for trying to emulate Ansel Adams?
Shame mud-slinging on someone's image has to happen. I remember a few great shots on this site that have been hidden, or the comments locked as a result.
What annoys me the most is the fact people use the photo's comment section as a means of debate, why can't they make their point in the forums instead of posting it to a ribbon winning shot that will always remain there.
Wow. I missed all the "feedback" posted on the blue mentioned in this thread - and I'm not sorry I did. :-( Certainly poor sportsmanship after the fact, and I'm really surprised at who threw the first punch. A bit of tarnish has shown up today at DPC...that's a shame.
