Is there a way in Photoshop to convert a large number of photographs to black & white? (using gradient map)

I have a portrait session with nearly 150 photos that I would like to convert to black and white as well. In the past, I have just created an action to speed up the process, but I wonder if there is a way to apply it to a batch of photos.

I think there's a "Batch" or "Automate" command under the File Menu -- then you'd select your Action and a target folder (if necessary). Make sure your Action saves a copy or that you have viable backups.

you definitely can.
First create an action for exactly how you want the conversion to go and save it.
Then use batch File->automate->Batch. You have to select your action in the top menu. Then select the source folder of your color images. For the destination create a new folder that is NOT inside the same folder as your source folder. If you you do you get a really funny error message, that says something to the effect of "Something has gone terribly wrong with this process and could not be completed." This should work as I have done the same thing you are trying to do.
