Steve, thank you for choosing my picture for discussion. I appreciate your interest in the image and this opportunity to discuss it. The sky is a field of view that is always interesting, it makes challenging graphic subject matter, as it is ever changing from day to night and from place to place. The inclusion of a sky gallery on this site I hope is no accident, as study of the sky by artists, photographers, and of course science has a long tradition. I especially like the dpc sky gallery and have enjoyed the pictures there. As a result of that motivation I have been taking sky pictures on and off all summer and this particular sky view was an interesting one. This photo was taken near sunset as a storm front was moving toward my location in Wisconsin from the Minnesota border on the western horizon. The image is full frame and it was taken at full zoom on my Olympus. I intentionally excluded the horizon line from the base of the picture. Photoshop processing was fairly minimal - it included (maybe curves at about 6); autocolor with some fading; resize; unsharp; and save to web. Pictoral elements include the sun peeking through the clouds; rain; and reflected rays from the sun. |
