Hey all.... hopefully you guys (esp sweet little Joey) can help me.
I have a picture or two that I want to "grunge up" a bit. I tried using Kent's Grunge effect, but it turned out crappy. I don't know what I did wrong?!
What can I do to grunge it up a bit, or something like that?
And Joey... I really want to buy your DVD, but I don't have the funds right now! If I don't have it by Xmas, I am going to ask for it for my present. I hope I can wait that long! :)
That is one of my faves of him that I shot. I had a problem with the pics I took outside though. They were VERY pixelated... I shot about 7:30pm, with an ISO of 200, a shutter speed of about 160-200, and my ap was around 2.8-4.0. I really had to work on it, so it wouldn't be grainy.
I was hoping the grunge effect would help mask this problem. :(
just a really quick edit, as this thread caught my eye as i was on my way out.
first, a curves adjustment pulling it on the brighter side. then brightness/contrast, turning brightness down and contrast up. a little bit of burning on shadows and nightlights here and there. duplicated the layer, added a small amount of grain to it, then desaturated and set blending mode to multiply. turned the opacity down a little bit, merged, saved for web.
i wouldn't be able to tell you exactly what i did in between; all up to your personal tastses, i suppose.
i have textures and stuff on my other computer but i'm on my way out so i didn't put any on here.
I'm no Joey, so grunge really isn't my thing, but I gave it a whirl anyway to see if I could.
I dunno if it's any good, but it was fun.
Hey, wouldja mind posting the editing steps for that? Pretty please?
Well...umm....lemme see if I remember :P
I desturated it a bit, and burnt all the shadows at around 10% or so. I made an adjustment layer that was sepia and grainy and kind of played with the opacity of that a bit. I made another adjustment layer to which I applied some specific curves adjustments (to give a somewhat cross-processed look) and played with that too. Then I used some brushes I picked up here and there . I then applied another layer which was a scanned piece of old paper with high contrast, and played with that too. It's all just a matter of experimenting until you think it looks right. Wait for Joey to give some input tho, I'm sure he know more than I ;)
I really like Annah's version a lot. One thing I think that is really great about it is that it addresses the primary fault of the original pic: that of the blown out sky.
The placement of some shadow in the top right hand corner also weights it for the flow of the eye and allows the eye to move from the lower left right up to the top right in a way that is pleasant. This flow also accentuates the slight tilt to the picture in a very interesting way.
levels/curves, Mr. Contrast filter, color sat, contrast, burn/dodge brush, two additional texture image layers (sidewalk cracks and dirt/grunge from old bathtub), transparency brush.
Just a quick edit. Adjusted levels and curves. Created new layer for the grunge (broken ice shot). Multiply at 45% opacity. Eraser tool to remove grunge from hands and face. Flatten - save for web.
