I'm looking at buying a D-SLR in the future. Is there a "standard" or common size for filters for the lenses I'll be buying or does it totally depend on the lens. I'm pretty sure the answer is that it depends on the lens, but I figured I'd better ask.

The reason I ask is that I currently have a cheap 52mm filters. The reason I didn't even consider better filters was that I really am looking at my 5700 as a stepping stone to a D-SLR in the future and I'd rather buy things like the teleconverter than spendy filters for that camera. However if I knew I could use my 52mm filters on my future camera I'd be more inclined to buy better filters.

depends on the lens. Whenever you look up lens info, it will have the diameter listed on it. There would be a few out there with 52mm, but not many. If you're going D-slr, just wait until you've selected your lenses

55mm is a more standard size. you can get a step-up ring for your 52mm to 55 so you can hold the standard filters.. but if you end up buying an SLR and then have lenses that are 58mm or some other size, then you're still SOL. filters are cheap enough, i wouldn't worry about it. if you can't reuse your filters on your new camera after, you can always resell them with your old cam or separate on ebay or something, and get most of your money back.

It depends on the lens.

If you are careful you can buy lens combinations that compliment each other in terms of focal length but can also share filters.

At over $100 for a decent large filter, its worth paying attention to this.

Yeah no kidding.

I think I'll stick to cheap filters for the 5700. I'll think carefully about lens selection when I get the D-SLR to try to get the most out of my filters.

What filters do you like? I've been looking at the B+W filters but they are the only "high end" filters I know of.

I got my star filter from Ritz camera... made by Quantaray.. i like it.. the first filters i got were a set, polarizer, uv, and flourescent filter, and i got 'em together on ebay for like 20 bux.
