I hear you, borders tend not to do well, unless they're plain black. I've used a few that I thought really added to the shot, and got slammed for them in comments and scores. I'm not complaining - I'm glad people took the time to tell me that they didn't think the borders worked, but it just seems that they're not much liked overall.
This is strange, as in exhibition and print contests I've seen, everyone mounts their shots, and many, many of the mounts include a border of some kind.
