Usually I can roughly predict what kind of a score I will get, but these did REALLY badly. Especially my latest... even if the grain wasn't to everybody's taste, surely it didn't deserve to do so badly? Where am I going wrong with these shots?

There was a comment on your photo stating "Hey, what kind of a camera is that?! It looks like a toy. Good idea you had here but I think the toy camera turned out a fuzzy picture."
Maybe that sums it up - they saw you weren't using Canon EOS 1D and thus thought your photo wasn't worthy of a higher placing ;)
(Just joking of course - I have an Optio S as well, and we know this camera can do wonders, as we can see from your two blue ribbons !!)
I must admit, I didn't like the grain. To me it looked like bad noise - and most people here seem to vote for tack sharp photos, with heavy reductions in points for anything else that isn't. So I'd expect the grain did play a part in the score you got for that one.
You eye shot is definitely the pick for me, but I expect it didn't do so well in the round challenge, because there's a lot in the photo that isn't. It's a great shot though and one I'd be proud to have.
I think my problem with the 'eye' shot is:
1. you're a bit too far away and this leaves the viewer too uninvolved
2. the colour wash is a bit anaemic, when in fact an eye is fascinating in colour which is frustrating
3. the reflecetion in the eye obliterates the pupil
The black & white shot is just a bit bland I think, not much detail or anything to hold the interest.
With self-portraits the viewer is always looking for something that gives a clue to the character of the person and these two do not give much away. The 'fuzzy' one does however show some more of your character and in my view is the better shot, allowing for the previous criticism.

I even knew it in the UK and I haven't been at school for decades :) Think it might have been popularised in a teen flick somewhere in the last 10 years or so.
Well, you learn a new thing every day.
I'm going to ask everyone if they know that. Maybe I'm just really unobservant... I know I was before I got a camera.
I'll try to avoid that in self-portraits from now on! lol
