- duplicate the layer
- add a layer mask
- in Channels pallet select only the layer mask just added
- select the gradient tool
- drag from left to right, or right to left, either one.
- if the gradient isn't white on the left and black on the right, ctrl-I to invert it.
- select RGB again (and deselect layer mask)
- in Layers pallet, select duplicate layer
- change blending mode to screen
- adjust opacity to taste.
