I figured out something kinda cool tonight using Neat Image with the high pass sharpening technique.

I pretty much followed this tutorial:

But, I ran neat image on the sharpening layer. It did a wonderful job of sharpening the image without sharpening the noise. Pretty cool.

very cool. Thanks for the tip.

Basic editing would not allow this, correct? Since it does uses Hard Light and not Normal?

Nice tip, I do something similar when I use contrast masking since the shadows layer will get brightened up alot and the noise comes popping out. So I will run the shadows layer through neat image and kind of focuses neat image to the spots where it really needs it.

Yeah only for use in advanced editing

I followed these instructions and found the noise to stand out more than the original (though not being sharper). Using the sharpening built into Neat Image will ignore the noise detected in the profile, possibly providing a better result.
