The tripod will not do damage to the camera. What will damage the camera is it crashing to the ground due to the tripod being tippy.
What tripod do you have? I don't think that lens is too heavy for a sturdy tripod.
What to try:
Extend the tripod to full height (comfortable height for you), mount the camera with lens and see if it tends to lean forward.
One thing to minimize the tippiness of the tripod is to have the lens project out over one of the legs.
Also, check the following specs:
weight of lens + weight of camera body
max weight that tripod can support
