I recently bought a Canon 350D.
When I insert the software my demoshield crashes. So I was wondering if there is another way to get to those raw files without a CardReader.
I've tried numerous software bundles, but none of them seem to work. And I can't be arsed to get PS CS2 because it eats up waay too much memory than it should, and I like PS7 more.

The first problem requires either the Canon software (for the camera link) or a card reader. I highly recommend the card reader. A fast, USB 2.0 reader is only $20 or so, and will greatly speed up transfers from the card to the computer, and also saves battery power in the camera. You won't go back to the camera-to-computer link.
The second problem is easy to solve without Canon software. Download RawShooter Essentials 2006 (free) from pixmantec.com and you're set.
Canon includes a free RAW converter with their camera, it's on teh disk, along with the software to connect the camera to the computer.
Alternately, DPP (Digital Photo Pro) is a free canon program that converts the RAW files and more. If it's not on your disk, go the canon site and look up most any camera (used to be a 1D thing, but i think 5D and 30D have it now) and look under downloads and DL the DPP updater. it'll install it.

But there is one thing that still bothers me: If I connect the camera, how come that I can't actually SEE the files? When I open up explorer and browse the camera, there are a few directories which contain jpegs, but I find it weird that I can't actually see the raw files.

If you shot RAW then the files should have the CR2 extension. JPG is, well, JPG.
Canon has a 'root' directory on the CF card and then a directory below that that is numbered - it holds 100 files, and then automatically increments to the next 100.

If you are using WinXP microsoft has a RAW file viewer that integrtes with Windows Explorer. (Microsoft's Raw File Viewer)

It's a quirky thing, to be sure, but there's nothing wrong; that's just the way it is. It *has* to be by Canon's choice, but for the life of me I don't understand why they do that. It confuses the heck out of people for no good reason.
