After I got 30D, I had problems with RAW conversion. Photoshop CS doesn't support it and I don't want to buy CS2. I have tried DPP, but its very slow conversion. I tried RSE, but it seems to have problems. does it support 30D ? the files open, but they look weird to me. RSE seems to work fine with my 10D raw, but not with 30D.
RSE should work, but you will need RSE 2006. It is available for download from the Pixmantec site.
Another option is Canon DPP. Again, you'll need the most recent version.
Yet another option, if you prefer ACR, is to download the Adobe DNG converter, batch convert your RAW files to DNG, and then they will open in your current version of ACR!
I will give the DNG conversion a try if that's free :)
in relation to dpchallenge, if I conver to DNG, do I still need to keep a copy of .CR2 for validation ?
DNG will be fine. Please note that you have two options in conversion to DNG:
1.) Convert
2.) Convert & embed RAW file
The first option basically puts a "wrapper" around the original RAW data, containing an explanation of how to decode it. The second option does the same, then embeds a *second* copy of the RAW file into the DNG file.
Files created by method 1 are slightly smaller than the original RAW file, due to more efficient compression and recovery of file header space. Files created by the second method are close to twice as big as normal RAW files :-P The only benefit is the ability to later extract the RAW file. Humans need two copies of DNA, your files do not.
Some folks (pro's mostly) seem to think DPP's colors are better than if you use camera RAW for the conversion. I don't have anything to compare - breezebrowser pro ($69 i think) uses canon's software for the conversion. I can't say it's faster or not - i start a conversion and walk away.
Probably 85-90% of my work is done in DPP or BB in RAW anyway.
