I thought I might try and make this a regular feature... the criteria is the photo that gets the lowest placing that I've given 8+ to.
This challenge, it belongs to The Essentials by jgal76, and it looks from the comments given during the challenge that quite a few people would agree with me.
It may not be a pretty picture, but it's one of the best uses of negative space this challenge.
Creativity v. technique is often talked about on this forum, and I think this photo is an example of a creative photo that could have benefited from more technique... but is still excellent in it's own right.
I didn't get to vote on this challenge, but I too thought this was a great interpretation of the challenge. The negative space was essential to bringing out the theme that TV + Beer = Everything He Needs. Had there been any less "nothing" around his focal point, it would have lost impact. Plus, it was just plain fun.
I really thought it had a lot of story and the negative space was crucial to the shot. I guess a lot of people felt because it wasn't uniform it didn't count as negative space, but I thought the DOF handled that really well.

I was one of the 3 10s... This shot suffered from 'speed voters'... It is certainly a prime exmple of using the negative space to tell a story.
Wow, thanks for the mention Bob. I wasn't expecting for this one to do too well, due to the harsh lighting and i didn't have time to reshoot it. I had originally wanted to do this shot on a hardwood floor, but all the rooms with hardwood in my house had a panelling that cut the room in half. I'm glad enjoyed my attempt and liked the shot.

I really liked koriyama's abstract shot, and it ended at 133rd! I think it's a really cool abstract. Very artistic.
Niten's Cedar Sunrise was my next lowest at 61st place. Just beautiful.

This IS desolation to me.
I agree that it fits the theme. Perhaps too well. Wanting to look at the image has a lot to do with how I vote. And those babies make me wanna close the screen =(
