A question for the community about what we view our images on when voting CRT or LCD?

I prepare my entries with a calibrated LCD monitor and use the s-RGB profile to mimic how it should appear on the site, but somehow it never seems to compare to the original on my computer.

When I check my entry on an un-calibrated CRT monitor at work they often fall below par. If that is how some voters are seeing things then they won't be at all impressed.

I'm not sure how to change my workflow to compensate (if indeed I should be 'chasing my tail' in this way at all).

Any advice and suggestions welcome.

That's pretty much the nature of the beast when your dealing with so many different people with so many types of devices. Unfortunately your image is only going to be as good as the persons display device allows it to be.

The question you should probably ask yourself is:

"Am I more concerned with winning challenges than creating true calibrated images that will print exactly as I want?"

If you can answer that question then you know exacty what to do. Unfortunately you can't calibrate everyone's monitor so they can see the perfection you are creating. The only good thing is that they are seeing everyone elses images the same way - I would stick with keeping them nice and calibrated and letting other people see them how they see them.

Unless there is some miraculous push for every monitor to included built-in calibration hardware, this will always be a problem.

The you simply have to learn what the appropriate thresholds are to make your images look acceptable across the widest range of monitors - or start entering print competeitions

Thanks for the replies people. e301 I think you ht on a good idea here - why doesn't DPC organise a print exhibition and travel it around the world?

I've been to many galleries that proudly display photography of a much lower standard than we see here every day.

I think it would be a big hit and imagine the fun we'd have voting for which images to include :-)
