This past week I competed in a open photo competition locally. I had entries in 23 of the 27 catagories. I placed in the top 3 in 19 of the catagories. I found out yesterday as the show was coming down I was the only person to do there own "processing and developing." I was also the only person to show exclusively digital. Actually there was only one other photo that was digital other than my 23 photos.

I was really disappointed when the entry I thought was the strongest of all only got a second place, and didn't place in the best of show, but what was really surprising was this photo....

I entered it as a color photo other. There was no catagory for macro yes there was a catagory for flowers but not insects and I already had a flower entry which I thought was better and it did place 1st in the flowers

But to my surprise that yellow jacket and flower photo took runner up in best of show and first in the others category.

But as a local weekly newspaper stated this year was the first for digital photos to be entered and the real question was which is superior digital or 35mm and it followed with an article showing some pros and cons of both cameras.

Hmmm, considering I placed in 19 categories and was the runner up to the best of show I can't say 35mm is superior not when best of show was done in a photo lab and I did all my own editing and processing. As a matter of fact I am going out later this afternoon with the man who took best of show to try and convince him why he should go digital. This is the same man 5 years ago took the best of show from me 4 years running and I just haven't showed since then. I think I had a pretty strong come back, and I told him next year I would be back and I would reclaim the title.

So seriously which better in open competitions 35mm or digital?

I don't think it's digital vs. 35 mm as much as the strength of the photo. Congrats on doing so well in the competitions by the way, they are beautiful photos and deserved to do well! :)

You do have a distinct edge with digital, simply because YOU as the artist are in control of the post-processing, something which you give up going to a photo lab.

The answer is that both are better in certain situations. It's the system and the workflow that you're comfortable with more than quality differences in the final output. If the photo competition is to be displayed as still-life prints hanging on a wall, well any pro with a medium format camera, lighting etc would be able to produce things that most digital cameras couldn't touch. If you're talking about sports shots, well, a Canon 1D is probably going to allow you to get a necessary shot when it counts.

Tools are for the application, and the application always changes.
