Has anyone used NeatImage in PhotoShop as a Plug-in filter? I just realized this is possible with V 2.5 and later. Also, new for V 2.6, the plug-in can be invoked by an action, and will use the specified device noise profile, settings, etc.
One side benefit of using NeatImage as a plug-in is that you can fade it immediately after application if you want to add a bit of grain back.

Does fading it use layers? If so then it sounds like using neatimage within photoshop is not dpclegal.

Nope! You can fade in increments of 1% from 0% to 100% (no fade) and see the effect in "real" time. No layers involved.
I don't know about older versions, but in PS 7, immediately after you apply any effect or filter, e.g. gaussian blur, you can go to the edit menu and select fade/gaussian blur. This is one way to get a great soft focus effect. you can only fade an effect if you do it immediately after applying the effect.
