My brother's and their friends are coming to my house before the prom to get their pictures taken. The photographer at the prom is charging $30 for an 8x10 and the prices go as high as $150!!!! That is crazy! After spending money on a tux, flowers, transportation and tickets.... what high school kid has that kind of money??? Crazy!

Anyways, the theme is "A Red Carpet Affair"... and I would like to stay with that theme. I was thinking of gtting some red "carpet" for them to stand on, with a white backdrop behind them and maybe some black sheers draped in the back. But I dunno if that would be lame or too boring or OK?

What suggestions do you guys have? Keep in mind, I have a white backdrop, a brown, and a green. I also have gels, but I have no idea how to use them to change the color of my backdrop. So, maybe you could explain how to use gels if need be.

I know you guys are really creative... and I am sure you could come up with a great idea.

I like your idea of red carpet on a white background. Would probably use a red runner leading up to the subjects.

About throwing color onto the background:

What is your lighting setup like? How many lights? Do you have barndoors or perhaps a snoot you could use with the gels to isolate only that light hitting the background

Don't worry about "boring" - those types of photos are usually formal and somewhat "boring", even more so considering the theme (re formal).
If they want something goofy, they can do that at the nearest themepark.

Perhaps your local costume hire place might have some props that could come in handy, but maybe I'm going overboard here and the kids will be quite happy with any decent, clear, semi-formal portrait.

I have 1 800 Alien Bee with the Octabox, and I have 1 400 with an umbrella. I have 2 different umbreallas... the black and silver and the white and silver.

I do have a snoot and a set of barndoors.

OK, use your 800 with octobox for main lighting on the subject in front and slightliy off-center.

Place the 400 slightly behind (off to the other side) of the subjects and pointed at the background. If you use the snoot, point it near the center of the background so that it makes a circle that will surround the subjects in the shot and gel it with whichever color you'd like.

Or use the barndoor, also with the 400 in the same position. Just use the barndoors to make sure no light is pointed at the subjects and only onto the backdrop and gel it.

I think I would prefer the snoot better for this application, because it adds more center of interest to the shot.

Just try the lighting out before prom night.:-)
