Additionally, sometimes a polarizer will help reduce glare. Stand off-center, so that you avoid reflections (at least of yourself), unless you are recreating a scene from "Jaws." I have to deal with an auto-focus camera -- I think being at an angle to the glass helps it focus on the subject. If you can't use a tripod, try bracing the camera on a pillar or wall.
