"Web safe colors" means the pallete of 216 colors used in an old version of Netscape Navigator that has become a de-facto standard for compatible color on web pages. If you have a website with only a few colors, you use the web-safe pallete to choose colors that older browsers running on 8-bit displays don't approximate your colors with the nearest-available, or worse, obnoxious dithering.
You can convert your photos to 216-color web safe pallete if you want to see how Netscape Navigator 3.0 on a 386 running Windows 3.11 for Workgroups shows them. Best to save in a 24-bit format for the modernized masses and let the older computers automatically dither your masterpiece into a glorified Rubix Cube and be none-the-wiser. |
