OK, I spent 6 months in DC on a work related project. Now that I'm 2000 miles away, we have a monument challenge. Washington DC is the monument capital of the world, as far as I'm concerned. I predict kollin will get a top ten, if not a ribbon, this week!
I'd be surprised if there wasn't a monument somewhere withing driving distance. I can think of several less obvious ones I need to choose from that are near me.
A monument doesn't have to be the Lincoln Memorial to be a monument. :)
We have a town about 15 minutes away called Monument, Colorado. they don't have any monuments there, that I'm aware of...
How loose can we go?? Pikes Peak is sort of a monument to the explorer Zebulon Pike who named it! Will that work?

The frightening thing is that I don't see it as being outside the box (penalty ref!), but as using the challenge topic to inspire a shot.
I don't know why that idea popped into my head, straight after the obvious idea did. I certainly wasn't trying to think of something out of the ordinary. Maybe I opened my mind too much and it got stuck :-/
There are so many monuments here in Germany!!!! I dont even know where to begin. there are Castles on every corner that are dedicated monuments , but I am afraid that people will consider it a Castle instead of a monument! (Please forgive my spelling)
but now i actually feel sorry for everyone who else who lives in DC - people will probably vote down any recognizable DC monuments in an attempt to keep me from winning.
the irony, though, is i'm not even submitting a picture of a DC monument!
I live in DC, too, but the monument shot I'm going to get on Saturday won't be an obvious DC monument. I have a Cunning Plan, you see.
In any case, I admit I/we have an advantage living in Monument Central, but I think the best pictures in this challenge are going to be more metaphorical than literal. Anything created with love and care is a monument to he, she, or they that created it, and anything large and/or particularly imposing is monumental, especially if it's strikingly shot.
boy i wish that most dpc'ers had the openness to metaphor you seem to. unfortunately, most voters seem to be pretty durned literal .. :/

If it doesn't have a dead general on a horse, or a president on it, it probably won't get over a 5.0! LOL
I'm all for the metaphors and monumental things, but don't hold your breath for a great score. I'll give it a 10 in a heartbeat if it iw well done, but alot of voters will click 4 and move on without really thinking about it.
