I was trying to lay my hands on a freelancing work and – I got it :) .. now comes the difficult part of actually shooting it

Any tips, suggestions...

Event is an award ceremony. I am not sure of the lighting and distance yet... I will be using my Nikon D50, with one of the lenses (will decide seeing the venue) and SB-800 external flash unit.

Edit : I have never done this before, so I am nervous and definitely any help/suggestion will be appreciated !!

Make sure you are in the front where the action is taking place, don't be afraid to tell people how to stand or where. Back in the Navy we used to call these grip and grins. Your best bet for a lens is something around th 50mm range. Talk with whomever is cooridnating the event and get on good terms with them. You may not have any say in the background so get in close on the action. If its grip and grins it will be easy, just make sure the people turn at a 45 toward you.
