The pic may be fake, but I think the stats are accurate, from what I've read at STF. I don't know how Sony is going to keep noise under control though trying to cram 8mp onto a prosumer sized sensor.
Look familiar? One thing's for sure...it's already here, it's better, and it's called the Canon 10D. For all the hype on the Sony Talk Forum at DPReview you'd think the impending F828 (or whatever it will be called) was the second coming of Christ.
I posted a pic of what could be the real deal in my original message. Not quite sure what I think of it, assuming it's real. It's a bit ugly, hopefully the pictures it produces look better. ;)
i was looking at the stats closer.. and wow., i'm even more impressed now.... wide angle 28mm (up to 200mm for 7x zoom).. 8mp... RAW support, 640x480, 30fps video (!!), • Memory Stick • Memory Stick Pro • Compact Flash Type I/II • IBM Microdrive... in-camera contrast, saturation, sharpness controls, selectable shutter speeds up to 1/2000 (1/2500 in auto mode)... and lots more... i seem to notice a few drawbacks.. says the minimum shutter time is 10 seconds, but for the number of pictures i've taken at more than that.. i'd gladly trade it in for all that i'm getting..
i'm a minolta owner, but everything else i've got is sony and... woof.
i've got to say that not being stuck with the stupid memory stick, although a relatively minor thing, makes it MUCH more attractive to non-sony users. it's the little things that mean a lot.
anyway...time to start saving my pennies. (I almost typed "pennis," which is kinda funny. freudian slip?)

Just reading a few posts on dpreview. Apparently Phil Askey has admited to a couple of mistakes in his review. Macro was quoted as 20cm (it is in fact 2cm)
Also the max shutter time is quoted as 30secs, but on Phil's pre-production camera it only goes up to 10secs. Hopefully when this comes out this small problem will be fixed.
Specs look great - can't wait to see what this one will be able to do :)
PS. I've never seen Phil make so many posts on the dpreview forums - he's obviously genuinely excited about this camera
yeah, shutter speed should be a rather easy software based thing to fix.. (atleast for the longer ones).. bulb mode would have been appreciated though.. but i'm not complaining! they're improving on (or atleast keeping) pretty much *every* aspect of the f717.. i never thought i'd want to upgrade from this f717 for a while, since i didn't think the next generation was going to include so much.. now i'm geting itchy for it :)
pfft, if you base a camera purchase on how it looks,... need i say more? :)
I can grip the f717 really well, I like the size, and despite it's "huge lense", i like having so that i can get a nice grip. If the f828 keeps the same basic "ergonomic" aspecs, i dont care if it's GREEN, i'll buy it :P (pending actual photos from it of course :) )
No complaints with what I've seen so far. I loved my DSC-S85. The emerald color interests me as does the f/2-2.8, the Infrared, the 2cm macro focusing distance and the 640x480 movies.
I'm a little (very little) put off by the lack of smaller apertures (f/8 seems to be the smallest) and the lack of slower ISO emulation (isn't anyone going to handle 64) in the next generation. I saw where someone said it doesn't handle bulb (extended shutter open) shots. So I guess it doesn't have a shutter release (I'd think that might be useful for portraiture even without the bulb setting).
Personally, I'm still glad with the 10D (I can't afford an f/2 or f/2.8 yet but I know I will and those will stay with me) but this camera looks like a great purchase.
What is wrong with the looks of the F828, looks great to me. "Why no DSLR?" I would like to be able to change lenses, but I don't see the need or advantage of a mirror. I like to use the lcd for making a composition, I only use the viewfinder when I can't use the lcd because of bright (sun) light.
I must have this camera. All I can say is wow! I'm not sure there is much more that I would need. One nitpicky thing that it needs and I wish I had now is the ability to scroll through images while being zoomed in to 5x. This allows for a side by side comparison of critical details instead of having to zoom back out go to the next shot and zoom back in. I thought I wanted the Canon 10D but I think the F828, with it's RAW format, would be perfect. Plus I really enoy being able to preview my shots and using the swivel body to get difficult shots which is unavailable on the pro cameras. The wide angle addition makes it very appealing and with the little extra zoom and 3 million more pixels I wouldn't need my clunky teleconverter as often. The EVF is much better too. Then there's the movie mode.... I'm having a hard enough time getting my F707 into certain events, I would really have a hard time with this camera. Now, what can I sell in order to get it?
sweet, I wasn't expecting it so soon. I have only had my camera for 3-4 months and they come out with this. They will be comming out with the next one probably before I am ready to buy again but I am really excited about this camera being able to read multiple types of cards.
It will be interesting to see how the new sensor runs. I'm still hoping we might see a DSLR from Sony though. Figure they have the pro video arena covered, move onto the still world now.
