I was comparing my images at 640 vs. 720, and I see really very little difference. Is there supposed to be a really big difference, or did I download wrong? It is already at 193 kb and is 720 by 540, but everybody is saying how huge theirs look?
Post the same image to your workshop at 640 pixels and tab back and forth; you'll see the difference. But no, it's not a huge difference if you have a normally-proportioned entry. It's a pretty dramatic difference if it's 720x720, though...
Thanks Bear. I can see that 720 by 720 would be quite huge. I almost wish I could adjust mine to be that, but it would lose the composition. Well, I'll keep that one in mind in case they do this again.
As in lots of things, size matters in photography. A bigger image has more detail and can be apprehended more quickly. But as Robt. said, the difference between 640 and 720 is not that huge.
The size differences is much more important for some image than others. I have some soft-focus image that look about the same at 640 and 720 except for the size. But there are other images with fine details that really come alive at 720 or larger.
I looked again at my image, and I can see where the additional size has added a dimension I couldn't get at 640. It does have some fine details that would be totally undefined at 640. Well, I also know that I don't have and slr, so for every extra detail I am getting, the slrs are getting extra as well, so I am sure my position overall will not be changing dramatically. Now if I could submit at 720 and everybody else had to submit at 640, I might actually have a chance at a ribbon.
