Your printer is probably not supportes by Windows XP drivers,i had the same problem with my Epson 440 and I trashed it!
Anyway price of the printers is equal to a replacement cartridges!

I have a Z32 and for some photos I can get a decent job out of. Usually they end up like what you got though. It is not that great for photo quality. Kodak papers have given me the best with this printer though, matte or glossy.

I will put in a plug here for DPCPrints - their printer is much better than anything you are likely to ever have in your home. Basically, what you see is what you get with their printing. I love it!
IF the DPC Prints are so good they should shout about it more. From what I can see buyers don't know what kind of print they receive - Inkjet, dye sub or bromide, etc. Some are lightfast and others aren't, so more technical spec would be useful.
I have a HP Photosmart 7550 and i love it, it prints exactly what i see on the screen beautifully, and i print on crappy photo paper. I have been very pleased with it so far.
Jon Lucas: DPCPrints is actually EZPrints... they use real photographic paper, the image is projected somehow onto the paper, and it's developed like a regular photographic print.
