I then increased the saturation a little bit and created a new layer and applied the \"Sharpen\" filter, I then lowered the opacity of that layer to about 30% and flattened the image.
An adjustment layer is a limited use layer that you get when you click the little black/white circle at the bottom of the layers pallete.
It's different than a regular layer, and regular layers aren't allowed in basic challenges because it's too easy to control the effects that you can otherwise legally apply, for an effect that's outside the rules of a basic challenge.
Next time you can just apply the sharpen you want, and then go to Edit -> Fade Unsharp Mask, and adjust the opacity there.
But who knows what I will get DQ'd for next.....sigh. I might just stop entering challenges.
no reason to do that -- one mistake is just that, a mistake. Something done without intention -- I don't see the point in compounding it with another act done with intention (no more challenges).

As a point of information, if you want to know what is and what is not an "adjustment layer" in Photoshop, open an image and go to "layers/new adjustment layer" from the menu. This will give you a number of options for adjustment layers, including "Selective Color", "Levels", "Brightness/Contrast", "Curves", and "Hue/Saturation", which are by far the most commonly used adjustment layers.
They all have in common that the layer itself contains no pixels; it just applies a set of "instructions" to the image beneath. Each of these adjustments can be reached also without generating an "adjustment layer" by clicking "image/adjustments" in the menu, but these adjustments then become what we call "destructive"; they are applied directly to the image itself, and the onlu way to undo them is to back up in your history states, losing everything you have done since the adjustment was made.
The value of "adjustment layers" is that these things tend to be interactive; that is to say, you may do a hue/saturation adjustment and then follow that with a levels adjustment, and find that after levels have been applied hue/saturation needs further tweaking. Using "adjustment layers" makes it possible to do this repeatedly without a lot of backing up and redoing.
Bear in mind also that any layer can me used in many "modes"; "multiply", "screen", "soft light", and so forth. By default a new layer (adjustment or otherwise) is set in "normal" mode, and in basic editing ONLY normal mode is allowed for adjustment layers.
yeah tell me about it. My second entry was 6.95 when it got DQed. ;)
And MY second ribbon was DQ'd because my time/date stamp was off by 12 hours on my then-brand-new 20D, which had been set at the store. I shot it at 6AM of the day the challenge was announced, and it stamped as 6PM of the day before :-( If I had happened upon that dawn Tuesday instead of Monday, it wouldn't have mattered, sigh... Single best image I ever entered...

Why would you not get suspended? You have had 2 DQ's in less then 2 weeks. Is there something in the rules that makes you think that you wont get suspended? Just curious cause I dont see anything that would make me think if I made those mistakes that I wouldnt get suspended.

MK I did read that, but I dont see anything in there that would say he wouldnt get suspended. Am I reading that wrong or is that your way of saying he is? I am a little more confused by your answer then I was before.

I apologize. I completely misread your original post. That's what I get for signing on too early on a Saturday. I thought you were asking why he WOULD get a DQ, not why he WOULDN'T. Durr.
