I know we recently had a discussion on this matter but I have overlooked the thread in my searches so I'm asking again. What do you use for storage? I have a Canon EOS 10D and just to get better, I'm taking 7 and 8 and 10 pictures of the same thing from slightly different angles and then deciding what I like later on. I generally shoot about a gig worth of pics and then move them onto my computer and onto CD's. Basically every shoot takes 2 CD's. Does anyone have a better methodology? I have 320 Gigs on my computer but I've lost the hard drive before and so that's not an option. I want these for archiving purposes. Anyone like DAT? What about DVD's? What do you find are your costs for these mediums (or whatever you use)?
CDs can hold up to 700MB of data, more than 480 times as much as a floppy disk. DVDs can store 4.7GB of data, the equivalent of about 7 CDs, 18 Zip 250 disks, or 3200 floppy disks. With this kind of capacity, you can easily back up your entire digital photo collection — and keep them safe for years.
Yeah, DVDs are just about okay. I require 18 DVDs to correctly back up my digital files from the last 2 years. This is just the RAW images, not any of the processed, converted, or generally tidied up versions.
At some point I'm hoping the storage technology will leapfrog the requirements - its just about catching up now though.
DVD. 70p a pop in tubs of 100 so it's cheaper per MB than CDs at 20p each.
I only throw away the obviously bad shots, and keep all the psd files I create during processing so it soon adds up.
My strategy is to use cameras with lower resolutions so that my thousands of pictures can fit on a couple of cds, but they usually just reside on my tiny 18 gig harddrive so that someday it can crash and destroy all my work.
