I wanted to take some photos of a friend's watercolor paintings. Hung it on the wall, used a tripod. I lined up the lense parallel to the center of the image. The sides of the image are bowed out? What am I doing wrong? I have had this happen on landscapes with the horizon line also.

barrel distortion?

EDIT: zoom in some, it's not you, it's the camera.

deapee is right. It's the distortion effect caused by the focal length of your lens and your closeness to the subject. Back up as much as you can and use the zoom of your camera to compose your shot. This will minimize (but maybe not completely eliminate) the effect.

If you have cs2 there is a function called lens correction that you can use to corect barrel distortion
