This site has tons of great photogs on here, so Imma aska question:

When doing macro photography, is it better to use a telephoto lense to get in tighter or use the macro filters? Obviously, from a price perspective, the filters are tons cheaper. Which option gives the best results?

By macro filters, you mean closeup rings? Like the +1/+2/+4 rings?

Yes, that's exactly what I mean.

i believe that diopters, dedicated macro lenses, and extension tubes will ultimately give you more magnification than just zooming in.

That said, I often like the effect the latter gives with blurring the bg - assuming i don't want to count the hairs on a fly.

From what I've read true macro lenses give the best results, next best is to use extension rings or bellows between the camera and an ordinary lense and last is to use closeup filters. Remember that closeup filters are either 1 or 2 element pieces of glass. The optics in a macro lense are much more superior.

If you can afford it get a macro lense. They come in different focal lengths.

I just play with the closeup filters since I can't afford a macro lense at the moment.

If you do a google search on 'macro photography' you'll get plenty of information regarding the pros and cons of all options.
