Well, I just had to go out and walk around the neighborhood and shoot some test shots. I mostly wanted to see how sharp or soft it was at the high end of the range (105mm) and how the IS worked (never having had an IS lens before).
All these are 100% crops with no sharpening other than the JPG algorithm. They are all handheld with no particular bracing. I fancy that I can hold at pretty low speeds, but I didn't employ any particular techniques with bracing or breathing with these shots.
First, the money shot...1/100th at f/4. So wide open at the top of the range. I was quite pleased with this one. It makes me feel confident that I don't have to limit my aperture or range due to softening.
Now, the IS.

Ignore the noise as these were shot at ISO400. I just chose the ISO to give me a suitably slow shutter speed at f8. You can see some softening at 1/15th, I think, but that's still quite detailed. These little mossy guys are very hairlike in quality. They were also shot on manual focus at the very minimum focal distance (1.5ft) which may not have been optimal for a test shot.
I'm looking forward to using it in a real situation, rather than purposely finding something to shoot, just to shoot. I'll also find out how much difference there is between 17mm and 24mm in Miami Beach as I'm sure I'll want to shoot some landscape and architectural shots.
Looks like you have a good copy of the 24-105L :) Thanks for posting these. Hopefully you held onto just a bit of mojo from the lens you sold; I understand that stuff has a way of replicating itself!

When I got mine, Penny inherited the 28-75mm Tamron. But in the end, she liked the 24-105 so much, and it was so glued to my camera, that she got one of her own. That's a very nice lens :-) There's a fair amount of barrel distortion, especially at the wide end of the range, but it's easily correctable in post.
