normally I wouldn't do this, but I had a few people wondering how I "did" my heart picture

This is the original:


It's a mosaic that I made a few years ago for my girlfriend, comprising of 800+ bottle caps.
I simply went into a dark room and traced the outline of the heart for 30 seconds, painted with light if you will!

The finished result:

And it worked really well! Did you just use a torch (flash light) to 'paint' with?

Pretty neat idea. Did you just do the painting with light or did you do some other manipulations as well? It has a very 3-D feel to it. Like it's curved. Looks pretty cool, however you did it. :-)

just a torch, but I can't remember what one, I was switching between three different ones

edit to add: no other manipulation, just color adjustments in PS.
I was surprised and pleased with the 3D looking effect.

I just knew this was great. One of my favorites, the caps do look like its in 3d, great effect!

The 3D effect is a natural result of using the flashlight, which throws a centrally-weighted "cone" of light, with the edges being noticeably dimmer than the center. Worked great! What a happy accident!
