Just went through and rated all the trends pictures, some good ones in there! Gotta bring up the topic of the 20 odd lava lamp pictures! What a coincidence! They were all done well, though. It's funny just how many people thought of using them though.
I didn't even look yet--twenty! I must say, this is the FIRST time I've ever been trendy.

I'm not supposed to say, am I? But I don't think I'd be identifying my photo if I admitted it ... I happened to have experienced the original Lava Lamp trend, but have never owned one until about three months ago!
Still without looking I'll guess that mine looks "different" from others', but so far that's not impressing the 15 or so voters who've seen it so far .... good thing I'm going on vacation next week!

Trendy before, trendy now, and trendy for trends! I tried to do a lava lamp shot for Round, but couldn't get a good shot of the goo through the glass. There are definitely some better shots than what I was able to achieve. Funny thing was it never occured to me for Trends.
Although a couple did that have also shown up in smaller bunches: beanies and LPs-to-CDs.

I think this trends thing was a bad idea. Since dpchallenge receives photographs from individuals all over the world, trends are different all over the world....some American trends which the British might not understand or some Chinese trends which the South Africans might not understand. This I believe causes problems with the rating of this topic in that if it doesn't look familiar or ring a bell with us then we assume the challenge was not met and question the photo which may make us rate it low.
If I am not sure about the trend they are conveying in the picture I am going to vote on the merits of the picture. That will be fairer to the photographer than voting it down because it doesn't look like a trend to me.
surely one of the things you have in mind when you take a photo is the viewers terms of reference? I came up with a few ideas that I eventually discarded as I didn't think they were universal enough.

I'm certain this is why mine is straddling 5 (it would obviously be in the mid 9s otherwise!). Quite a few people (non-Brits) may struggle relating to the subject - but hey, it's all an education isn't it.

These are good points, which have applied to other challenges as well. Not all challenge topics "work," but then again there's nothing where everything works (corollary to Sturgeon's Law). That's why we have a suggestion area for new topics!
My guess is that votes are gonna be low on this one...
But that's just how you vote. So far, this is shaping up to probably be my highest average vote on a challenge ever (not that I know of any way to check...). I've given mostly 6s and 7s, and only a handfull below 5. And I'm not a super high voter, actually very average. My average vote cast historically is right around 5.
