I am designing a still life for use in one of the coming challenges which will contain the covers of a couple of books. Is it considered a violation of copyright law if the titles, authors and/or publishers names show? This image will certainly not be used to obtain financial gain, but just as a submission for one of the challenges. And, while I'm thinking about it, what if I want to make this picture available as a print, which would bring in some money? Any ideas out there about this?

You can use it as a contest entry with "no problem."
You probably can't sell prints (without a license) if the components are recognizable, unless the new work represents a parody or possibly a critical analysis (c.f. Andy Warhol's soup can art).
It may depend on the final appearance of your art--this is an acknowledged gray area in the IP world.
Thanks Paul, I had a feeling that would be the answer. I'm going to try as hard as possible to blur author and publisher names so that just the titles will be legible. And I'm going to forget about the idea of making it available as prints.
Post challenge it shouldn't be hard to clone out/blur out the names on the books if you do wish to make it a print. :) Prints don't have to be "dpc legal" remember.
