I am brand new at photography and am pretty interested so i know what I am doing... I have a canon S1IS, but I am just wondering if anyone knows a good internet site or information of how to get started into photography so I can use other modes than Auto, on my camera.
Thank you
Yes, I believe you may have come across just the site you were looking for. Feel frre to ask all the questions you want. There are MANY knowlegeable photographers here to help you on your way.
Try to shoot at ISO 50 or 100 whenever possible -- it gets pretty noisy at higher settings. If you shoot sunsets you might have to set Exposure Compensation (if using it) to -1/3 to -1.
The zoom can sometimes go too fast -- controlling it under hurried conditions can be tricky. The slow startup time, EVF system, and (pretty bad) shutter-lag can make getting action shots sometimes more a matter of luck than skill -- here's an example ...
Alright thanks guys.... my first photoshooting that Im trying out is of deer on snow, its hard because when getting too close they run away but my neighbour feeds them so i can get farely close.... what setting would you suggest for a picture like that?
well keep in mind snow has it's own challenges even without the deer. It can wreck havoc on your white balance and cause all kinds of weird glare and confuse the exposure meter.
Fortuantely you have a digital camera so you can take lots of pictures and try lots of different settings out without wasting much more than time.
Personally I'd get the snow down and then go for the deer ;)
I see your camera has a custom white balance feature in it. Get a middle Gray card (Middle grey is the printed value that reflects 18% of the light striking it) and use it to set the white balance and that should handle the snow. Shoot Away!
