Do you remember which lens you were shooting with? I'm thinking of getting a fast (f/1.8 or 1.4) 50mm lens and am wondering if it is worthwhile.

Með því að taka á F/2.8 þá geturðu tekið á meiri hraða. Kannski 1/40-1/60. Jafnvel meira. Fer bara eftir því hvernig ljósið er. Svo er líka sniðugt að taka á kannski F/11 og 1/3". Jafnvel fara upp í sekúndu. Fer einnig eftir ljósi. Og svo stillirðu flash-ið þannig að það flashi í endann. Þannig að það er opið án flash og svo bara rétt undir lokin þá flashar flashið. Þá kemur svona skemmtilegur effect.
Það er fínt að vera með vélina stillt á annaðhvort 400 eða 800. Ef þú ert að taka á löngum tíma þá er 400 fínt. En kannski skella því upp í 800 ef þú ert að taka án flash. Fer líka eftir linsunni. Dugar að hafa 400 ef þú ert með ljósop 2.8 eða minna. Svo er bara að prufa sig áfram. Og svo er líka skemmtilegt að reyna að koma áhorfendum inn í spilið. Fínt að ná mynd af bandinu og áhorfendum saman. Og þá er betra að vera með víða linsu. Og svo líka fínt að taka myndir bara af áhorfendum.
I think you should buy yourself the Speedlite 550EX flash. I've used one for almost a year now and it is just great!
If you are willing to spend some money I recommend the 16-35mm F/2.8L lense and the 70-200mm F/2.8L. It is quit good to be able to shoot at F/2.8 in often poorly lit concerts.
If you shoot at F/2.8 your speed will go up. Maby up to 1/20 or 1/60 even. Depends on the light. If you have an IS (Image Stabilizer) lense it is good to have that effect turned on. It is also quite good to take picture at F/11-F/22 and at speeds of 1/3" up to 2-3". You will get an excellent effect. This will only work properly if you flash in the end. You can adjust your Speedlite 550EX to flash in the end. Press the - and + buttons together until you see this small mark on the right side of the back monitor of the flash.
If you are shooting at F/2.8 or lower it should be ok to have your ISO at 400. It also depends on how much light there is in the hall. If you are using the flash 400 should be enough.
The audince is important. Remember to take picture of them. Getting picture of the audience and the band together makes a great shot. They are sometimes more exciting than just band-pictures.
Remember to get both close-ups and wide-angel shots.
Take alot of picture! Try what ever you think will come out cool.
To sum up:
1. When you shoot, shoot in burst mode. Take 3-4 picture in a row. Because often the first picture is shaken because you shake it when you press the button the first time. Then you just hold it in for 2-3 more shots.
2. Long time exposure and flashing at the end. It makes a great effect.
3. Remember to take pictures of the audience. Audience with the band often makes a great shot.
For less money, the 50mm f1.8 will give you a really wide open aperture for about $60 (US)
Rear curtain sync I think is also set as a custom function on the camera - it is for the D60 with a 420EX - not sure if that changes with the 550EX or not. This tends to give more 'normal' looking flash shots for long exposure/ flash / slow flash sync shots.
Flash with the Canon cameras works in two ways
In P mode, the flash is mostly assumed to be the only/ main light source.
Shutter speed is set between 1/60s and Xsync (about 1/200s normally) to avoid camera shake.
In Av/ Tv mode exposure is based on exposing for the background, and assumes the flash is just going to be fill - so you'll typicaly get long exposures, even with flash.
In M mode, the exposure is set for the background /ambient light and flash is controlled to give good foreground fill. Typically 'good foreground fill' is under the focus point.
I'm going to germany in a few weeks to shoot a rock festival, and I'm looking for any advice anyone can offer, since I don't have much experience. I've read the article at photo.net, I've gotten some advice from a friend who does it for a living (he's the guy I'm shooting for), and now I read Arnit's advice as well. Anything to add?
I won't have access to the photo pit (it's only for printed magazines), so the flash won't do me much good. My Dimage can shoot at F3.5 in the tele end. Will that be enough at 800 ISO? I figured I would shoot at 1/60 to at least avoid too much camera shake. Or do I need to use an even slower shutter speed?
A lot of things to wonder about, but I want to do the best I can :-)
