I am still on the hunt for a landscape-shooting buddy within a few hours distance of the Zermatt area over the holiday weeks! Anyone interested?
If you are too far away, or don't live there anymore, I would also love suggestions on good casual (non-technical) hikes (and ones that can be done all alone, which I might be!). Places within reach of a train ride in a round-trip "day-trip" (back same day) is what I need. Or right in the Zermatt area is even better.
I did manage to find a hiking guide book from a website online, but I didn't purchase it yet, as I was a little worred about the transaction.
Neil I was just outside of Zermatt this summer and I think you should be thinking about skiing not hiking. In the winter shadow of the Matterhorn I think the only hiking you are going to do is to get Gluhwein, which I highly recommend.

Thanks. I wish I was brave (or perhaps stupid) enough to ski with my SLR. Skiing would be a good way to get some nice views and landscapes. I will carry my S1 skiing though, but it's not very wide or high res.
I was tempted to buy the Panasonic LX1 just for the trip. Keep it in my pocket, ski, shoot, etc. It shoots RAW and wide angle (28mm). But it takes SD cards, and has noise at all but the lowest ISO (and it's around $400). I want to try and wait until Panasonic solves that. My S1 does fit in my bigger jacket pocket. But it's only 3 MP, and not wide enough.
I think I'll have to buy that hiking PDF tonight on the web. It wasn't too expensive.
I went through Switzerland this fall on the train. Unfortunately, it was on the overnight train from Stuttgart to Milan and it was dark the entire time and I was asleep. When the train stopped in Zurich, I did get to meet some Swiss Customs Agents who asked me some questions at about 3 am. I must have given them satisfactory answers becasue the went away and I went back to sleep. I woke up in Italy.
I can't wait to see your photos from the trip when you get back. Your going to get amazing shots everywhere you go in Switzerland so I wouldn't worry much about it. Cool. I hope I can get to places like this, and see some wildlife, without my skis!
This is my third time to Zermatt (my father in law has his birthday parties there every 5 years now!), but only the first time I've tried to do any serious photography there.

The Fuji Finepix F10 is tiny, 6.3 megapixels, clean to ISO800 and less than $300 (it takes XD cards though).
Do you have one?
I looked at that, it looks interesting. But then it's not very wide angle (36mm) compared to the LX1 (28mm). But the Fuji E550, which also can do high ISO (but to 800) is a bit wider 32mm, and can shoot raw, and has 4x rather than 3x zoom. Have you looked at that?
